Eligibility Policy and Requirements*

The McKenzie Institute's mission is to educate all appropriate health care professionals in the mechanical assessment and treatment of spinal disorders and to conduct or support research in this area. Ultimately, our goal is to help as many patients as possible.

Appropriate health care professionals are those with academic backgrounds and/or licensure/ registry that provide prerequisite knowledge, skills and abilities to best understand the principles of the McKenzie Method. Further, these are individuals who during the course of their professional experience encounter people for whom the McKenzie Method would be suitable and advantageous.

From our review of appropriate professionals to be considered to enroll in our Program of Certification, or parts thereof, we have established these objective criteria for determining our current policy for eligibility for the educational programming of The McKenzie Institute USA.

They are as follows:

Minimal Criteria to complete Full Program of Certification:

  1. Healthcare practitioner with at least a Bachelors Degree in the field of study

    AND

  2. Current licensure in the state of practice, or registry by the appropriate state or national regulatory organization.

In addition to having completed the four part course series, eligible practitioners must have had at least two years of postgraduate clinical experience to take the Credentialing Exam.

Approved healthcare providers who meet these criteria are PT, DC, MD, DO, and in some cases include ATC, RCEP (by ACSM), OT, RN, NP, ND and PA

Minimal Criteria for Parts A—C

  1. Healthcare practitioner with a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in the field of study but in a field without licensure or registry, or the practitioner is not able to obtain such or has yet to become licensed or pass registry exam requirements.

These disciplines will typically be ATC, EP, and OT.

Minimal Criteria for Parts A and B

  1. Healthcare practitioner with an Associates Degree in the field of study

    AND

  2. Current licensure in the state of practice.

This primarily refers to a PTA. (However, Part C is allowed for PTAs currently working with and supervised by certified McKenzie practitioners.)

*We expect all participants to be responsible in reviewing their scope of practice, state practice act and other applicable state laws or regulations of their profession to determine to what extent they can utilize certain aspects of the McKenzie Method in their jurisdiction.
